METISNET: How it works
METISNET is a non-commercial service which introduces Metis researchers to
each other through the exchange of surnames and research information.
The service is designed to assist researchers and while help is certainly
provided by Geoff and the other researchers, individuals for the most part
are expected to carry out their own work.
The names shown on the METISNET SURNAME LIST are those which have been
submitted by Researchers and indicate that at least one subscriber is
doing research on that family name. A few Surnames are being researched
by as many as 15 Researchers and to provide an example, many names like
Boyer, Bruneau, Cardinal, Delorme, Grant, Houle, McKay, Ross, Spence and
Vandal, all show over 10. This means that 10 or more Researchers always
know that they can share information or research tips with the others,
can get help, and can even brag a little about a success.
The RESEARCHER list shows the name and address of every subscriber to the
service. Each Researcher is given their own Researcher NUMBER which also
appears on the Surname lists beside every Surname that the Researcher has
identified an interest in.
If your Surnames don't appear on the SURNAME List, and you'd like to
have them included, please follow the procedure noted in the main letter
(ie.send a Pedigree Chart). Even if your Surnames are already on the list,
follow the same procedure as it will enable the other subscribers to learn
that you have information on that family which you are willing to share,
or that you are looking for information which they may have, and will
appreciate having.
The service is most useful for researching families who were a part of the
Fur Trade. The reason is based simply on the fact that most of the records
which are readily available cover the areas where this was carried on.
Records for researching in Ontario, New York, New England and the Maritimes
are not as readily available and possible subscribers should be aware of
this limitation.
Queries which deal solely with adoptions are not encouraged. Records and
research procedures for tracing "adoptions" are somewhat different than for
Genealogical purposes and this, coupled with the legal aspects (privacy
legislation etc.) will simply lead to referrals to Agencies or Societies
which specialize in that type of research.
Subscribers in the Calgary area are invited to monthly meetings in Geoff's
home where full use may be made of his extensive collection of books,
manuscripts, film and fiche and the 160,000 plus research names in his
computer. The first seminar on Metis research was held at the University
of Calgary in 1994 and will undoubtedly be followed by others.
The service is supported by volunteers and donations. Subscribers receive
the Newsletter and the annual up-dates to the Surname and Researcher lists
by supplying Self-addressed and Stamped (Cdn stamps) envelopes or a donation
of a minimum of $10.00US per year for those who can't purchase Canadian
stamps. To simplify the mailings, subscribers are asked to use #10
envelopes which measure 9-1/2 by 4-1/8 inches.
